Holiday Program
Students did a wonderful job at our Christmas show at St. John's this afternoon! Thank you, parents, for getting your child there early so we could get set up. We will resume sign club after the holiday break on January 2nd at our regular time and place. Have a magical holiday!

Today was our last rehearsal before our show at St. John's. I think the students will be glad to take a break from Christmas songs. For our next regular meeting on January 2nd, we'll do something different -- a scavenger hunt. I am also going to contact the sign language instructor at MSU-B to see if we can work together on a project. See you next Monday at St. John's!

We had a fun meeting today. The group practiced Christmas songs and then wanted to do a competition during the last 5 minutes of the meeting. Ian and Dean tied for first place. Way to go, guys! I told the group that we will not have a sign club meeting at school on Dec. 19 -- just the performance at St. John's at 4pm that afternoon.

Oh my goodness the students worked hard today! We learned The Twelve Days of Christmas. After everyone learned the signs for all 12 days, we assigned 2 students to sign a certain day of the week. The song is so fast that everyone had to be on their toes, but they did a great job. It will get easier with practice. I'm so impressed with the enthusiasm of the students. What a fun group!

Christmas Program for Parents
The Sign Language Club will be performing songs at St. John's Nursing Home on Monday December 19th at 4pm. St. John's is located at the intersection of Rimrock Rd. and Shiloh. We will be in Chapel Court. Please have your child there about 5 minutes early so we can start at 4pm. If you cannot bring your child, talk to me at the next sign club meeting and we'll see if we can find a ride with another family.

We practiced Frosty the Snowman and learned 2 new songs: Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree and Santa Clause is Coming to Town. Mrs. Concepcion came into the gym and the students wanted to show off one of their songs. Next week, we will start working on The Twelve Days of Christmas. I am amazed by how quickly the students learn these songs. I might have to find more songs for them! I am planning to have the sign club perform a couple of songs for the student body just before the Christmas break and I will call St. John's to set a date for a parent/community performance. I will let you know as soon as we have the St. John's date.

We started sign club with a story today. I read, "Dad and Me in the Morning" by Patricia Lakin about a hearing impaired boy and his dad. We learned that the hearing impaired boy in the story used a special alarm clock that woke him up by using flashing lights instead of a loud sound. The boy had to shine a flashlight on his dad's face in order to lipread. See if your child remembers other important information from the story. We practiced counting from 1 to 20 on one hand and reviewed the song "Firework." We also practiced the song "Fireflies" and some food signs. Check out aslpro.com for their video dictionary. Be aware that there are several different ways to sign words and that they only show one way, so be open to other interpretations that you might see elsewhere.

It's Not Too Late!
There is still interest in sign club, so we have decided to extend the deadline for joining. Students have until November 7th to sign up. Registration forms are available in the office. We will not have sign club next Monday, Oct. 17 because I have a meeting downtown that afternoon. We will resume on Oct. 24 and will continue to meet every Monday that school is in session from 3:10pm until 4pm.

First Day
Today was the first day of Sign Club. We had 35 students turn in a form, but only about 20 showed up to our first meeting. I think some students just forgot about it. Those who were there learned/reviewed the sign language alphabet and took home a "cheat sheet." We learned signs for the Katy Perry song Firework. Next week we will review Firework and learn a new song. When asked about their reasons for joining the club, most students were interested in songs and performing so that will be our focus this year, although we will learn useful signs along the way. Parents, you are welcome to join us so you can learn to sign, too! See you next Monday from 3:10 until 4pm.

First Day Oct. 3rd
Sign Club for this school year begins on Monday, October 3rd. Yes, we changed the meeting day this year. We will meet each Monday in the gym from 3:10 until 4pm. Students may not arrive before 3:05 as there will not be an adult to supervise them until this time. You may pick up your student in the front of the building at 4pm. Please be prompt!! There will be a green informational sheet coming home in your child's Monday envelope on the 26th. Please return it to the office by Sept. 30th if your child wants to join. Mrs. Hanson and I are looking forward to hosting the club this year but we will miss Mrs. Wheeler.

Final Day
Today was our last day of Sign Club for this school year. Students enjoyed popcorn and earned candy by reading sign language words and phrases. Mrs. Wheeler and the Hearing Impaired program has been moved to a different school for next year. We will miss Mrs. Wheeler very much and wish her the very best. Mrs. Dews and Mrs. Hanson will continue Sign Club next year. Thanks for being willing to drop off and pick up your child each Tuesday afternoon. We've had a great time and will miss everyone. Please join Mrs. Dews and Mrs.Hanson next year!

Reminder
We will NOT have sign club on Tuesday March 29th. Since the last assembly, we have been learning signs for household items (refrigerator, washing machine, iron, etc.), articles of clothing, and physical movements (walk, run).

Kindness Counts Assembly Performance
WOW !!! All of the students did great signing their songs. The whole school signed The Power Of One" at the end of the show. It was great. Our video and sound died, however the whole school pulled together and kept signing and singing the song. It was very powerful. What a great school we have !
