I Will Always Love You

The students did a fantastic job signing their songs at St. Johns nursing home. We had more than 30 children attend. The elderly people loved the performance and want us back again next year. A big thank you goes out to the parents for getting your children to the nursing home, despite the bad roads. Happy Holidays.

We had a great time at sign club today! We practiced the songs from last week and learned two new Christmas songs. We will learn one more next week. We should be ready for our performance at St. Johns nursing home at 4:15 on December, 20th. The intermediate students that are involved in student council will be able to leave 10 minutes early that day so that they can get to the nursing home on time.

The students learned the signs for Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty The Snowman,  and We Wish You A Merry Christmas. Next week we will practice these songs again and also learn the lyrics and signs for Must Be Santa and He'll Be Coming Down The Chimney.  Our sign club will be performing the songs for senior citizens at St. Johns on Monday, December, 20th at 4:15. Parents will need to transport their child. We will not have sign club on Tuesday, December 21st. We will start up again the Tuesday after the holiday break.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. After our break we will be learning a song titled " The Power of One". The sign club students will learn it first and then we plan to teach it to the whole school. Sign club students can help their classmates learn the song.

Monday, November 22, 2010

There will not be sign club this week because of early out. Have a great Thanksgiving and we'll see you next week.

We had a great class today. It's amazing how quickly everyone has learned such a complicated song. Keep up the great work! Reminder to parents: Please drop your child off at 3:05-- NOT earlier. We do not have access to the gym until that time. Janet, our school secretary, is unable to babysit students until sign club begins. Also, please note that sign club ends at 3:45, which is different from last year. Thank you!

Daylight Savings!!!

Don't forget to change your clocks on Saturday night!

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Mrs. Dews reviewed the alphabet signs with the group and then taught the students a color song--the red song. Afterward, Mrs. Wheeler taught the group signs to the song Tomorrow Needs Us. After learning each verse, students signed along to the music. It was fun to watch such a large group as they were engaged in learning. We can't wait to put together several songs so we can invite parents to a show! Great work, everyone!

We had a great turn out for our first meeting of the 2010-2011 school year. Students learned each letter of the alphabet and an object that begins with each letter and how to sign the ABC song. They practiced signing to each other. Next week we will learn two songs. Please pick up your student(s) outside the front office. An adult will ensure that everyone has a ride. Please be sure you are on time. Thank you for sharing your child with us.

Sign Club 2010-2011

Sign Club will begin on Tuesday October 26th in the gym. We will meet each Tuesday from 3:05 until 3:45. This year, primary and intermediate students will meet together, rather than having 2 separate clubs. We're excited to receive so many sign-up sheets. If you haven't returned your sign-up slip yet, please do so as soon as possible.

Students did a great job with our video response to We Are the World. Mrs. Wheeler's son, Luke, video taped the song and will post it to YouTube after some editing. We will send you a link to the video as soon as it has been posted. At next week's sign club meeting, we will practice for Thursday's show.

Storyteller

Thanks so much to Char and her granddaughter, Brooklynn, for being our guest storytellers today. I'm posting a picture of the huge group of k-3 students, mesmerized by Char signing The Three Pigs and Jack and the Beanstalk. During the last few minutes of their visit, students were able to ask Char some questions. We learned that Char was born deaf and that her parents did not find out she was deaf until she was about 2 years old. Her brother had been carrying a heavy television set and needed her to move out of the way. Char, of course, did not hear him and therefore did not move. He ended up dropping the television with a loud bang, and when Char did not turn around with the sound, her parents knew that she must be deaf. A doctor confirmed it shortly thereafter. Students were extremely respectful and had fun picking out familiar signs from the stories.

Schedule for Remainder of Year

May 11: Visitor: deaf woman from the community will come to read a story to students
May 18: Video response to We Are the World
May 27: Sign Club performance for parents 1:15 in gym

Sunday, May 2, 2010

Mrs. Dews was sick last week, leaving Mrs. Wheeler on her own, so we did not post out video response to We Are the World. Instead, the sign club played games. This Tuesday, May 4th, we will finally post our video response. Again, anyone who did not return a permission form to be videotaped will be our audience.

Saturday, April 24, 2010

The sign club performed at the school's Earth Day assembly on Thursday. We used it as our dress rehearsal for the end of year show for parents, which will be at 1:15 on Thursday, May 27th in the gym. This Tuesday, we will record our video response to the We Are the World YouTube video. Students who did not return a permission slip allowing them to participate in the video response will act as our audience.

Friday, April 16, 2010

Hello, parents and sign club members. We haven't posted anything in quite a while. We have an end of year performance planned just for our families in the gym from 1:15 to 2pm on Thursday, May 27. We hope you will come and see the songs students have been working on. See you then!

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Mrs. Wheeler taught the students some ocean animal signs and then they played an ocean animal Bingo game. Afterward, students learned more signs for the song We Are the World and then practiced to the music. Next week, a permission slip will be going home, asking your permission to allow your child to be videotaped. We found an interesting opportunity as we watched the youtube video of the song. Near the end, it invites viewers to upload a video response to the song. We thought it would be cool to upload a video of our sign club signing to the song.

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Over the last two weeks, students have learned 110 school signs, signs that might be useful at school. They should have brought the sheet home which had pictures of each sign so they can practice. We will start learning the song We Are the World next week. Happy Valentine's Day!

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Last week students learned signs to go along with the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear. We reviewed those signs today. We played Last Person Standing, a game in which students compete head to head to be the first to say the sentence that is signed. The winner for the kindergarten through 3rd grade group was Emily T. The winner of the 4th -6th grade group was Hunter. Great job, everyone!

Last week both groups started learning signs for a song they will perform for the Spring concert. The song is We Are the World. We will post a how-to-video soon. New sign language links have been added, so please check them out.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Students watched a recording of their Christmas program. If you would like a copy of the program, please speak with Mrs. Dews (281-6219) and she will burn a copy of the DVD for you. Depending on the number of requests, you might be required to supply your own blank DVD.
